Marketing your film or video means getting the word out about it, or creating "buzz." If you have a distributor, they will help market your work to media, schools, and festivals, but the community outreach could remain your responsibility. And if you are self-distributing, it's all you, baby!

Making your marketing plan

Before you start planning any outreach or promotion campaign, you should figure out what your goals are. You need to be realistic about what you can accomplish with your resources. Defining your goals can help you plan and prioritize your efforts and also help you determine whose help you need to accomplish your goals.

1. What effect do you want your movie to have on people?
2. What do you want them to do? Do you want them to think differently, vote differently, take action, talk about the issues with their family and friends?
3. What's your marketing and distribution budget?
4. How much time and energy do you have?
5. Who are your marketing partners?
6. Are you focusing on local or national audiences?
7. How will you evaluate the success of your efforts?
8. What organizations are you connected to that can help you with your campaign?

By answering these important questions, you can begin to strategically plan the different parts of your outreach and promotion campaign.
