James, a dance teacher at Skyline High School in Oakland, finds
it frustrating that Physical Education is usually the first thing
to go when there are cuts. Athletics in general and dance in particular
can provide lessons in socialization. "Students learn how
to work cooperatively, which is a skill they will need forever.
They learn to be respectful. They learn tolerance and acceptance,"
says James. "When kids are moving, working hard and learning
to be part of a team, they seem to be more motivated in other
areas of their life."
Ms. James has been a dancer for over 20 years, and holds the highest
passion for her field of expertise. Her students love her because
she is passionate, determined and disciplined in providing structure
for their creative expressions. In a school system where teachers
often are stationed in a subject outside of their field of expertise,
Ms. James provides a perfect model for the value of having trained
and passionate teachers, and greater for the life skills that
can be gained in the classroom.
